What Does the Bible Say About Health?

Does God want you to be healthy? As we open up our Bibles and look at the Word of God through the lens of health, we observe a theme—that God cares deeply about our health. In fact, he intends that we live healthily and prosper. The Science of Being Well Audiobook by Wallace D. Wattles

  • “You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.”—Deuteronomy 5:33
  • “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”—3 John 2

What Does the Bible Say About Physical Health?

The Bible says that we are to take care of our physical health because it prepares us to fulfill the divine purpose God predestined for us. How we care for our bodies can represent how we honor the Lord, as well as provide a way for us to tap into the strength of Christ. How To Use Your Healing Power By Joseph Murphy

  • “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”—Romans 12:1
  • “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”—Philippians 4:13

Health is something many people consider a priority, and while it should never be an idol, it is a reflection of how we think of God’s holy temple.

  • “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”—1 Corinthians 6:19-20

When He created Adam and Eve, they were perfectly healthy. They didn’t experience aches, pains, aging, or death… until sin entered the world. As time went on, sin took its toll on all of creation. The blessing of health was the first lie the enemy told Eve.

  • “Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.’”—Genesis 3:4

Compromised health was what the enemy used to get his foot in the door.

(Isaiah 53:4-6) Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. {5} But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. {6} All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

(Isaiah 57:17-19) For the iniquity of his covetousness I was angry and struck him; I hid and was angry, And he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. {18} I have seen his ways, and will heal him; I will also lead him, And restore comforts to him And to his mourners. {19} “I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “And I will heal him.”

(Matthew 8:2-3) And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” {3} Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

And she arose and served them. {16} When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, {17} that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”

(Matthew 9:35-36) Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. {36} But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

(Matthew 14:35-36) And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, {36} and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.

(Matthew 15:28-31) Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. {29} Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. {30} Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. {31} So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

(Matthew 21:14-16) Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. {15} But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant {16} and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise’?”

(Mark 1:34) Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

(Luke 4:18) “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

(Luke 4:40-41) When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. {41} And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.

(Luke 5:15) However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities.

(Luke 6:18-19) as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. {19} And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

(Luke 9:11) But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.

(Acts 5:16) Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

(1 Corinthians 12:7-9) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: {8} for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, {9} to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

(James 5:14-16) Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. {15} And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. {16} Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

What Does the Bible Say About Mental Health?

Health is more than being physically capable of stepping into our assignment. We must also seek to be mentally healthy, keeping our thoughts and minds on things of God. Guided Meditation Radiant Health

  • “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…”—Philippians 4:6
  • “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”—Philippians 4:8

Anxiety and worry have quickly topped the charts as one of the main pain points of people today. We have plenty to worry about— but Jesus instructs us not to. He says don’t worry about what tomorrow will bring, but rather trust in the Lord’s faithfulness to provide (see Matthew 6:34).

Easier said than done, right?

We are surrounded by terror and negativity. The enemy is prowling around, waiting for an open door to introduce worry. But the Lord says that He gives us a way out of every temptation. When anxiety is pressing in and your heart is heavy with worry, take those thoughts captive and give them to Christ, making them obedient (see 2 Corinthians 10:5).

Write down Philippians 4:8 and meditate on those things. What we stress about, and our reactions to it, impact all aspects of our health. It’s taken years of research for man to finally come into agreement with what the Lord says about health.

  • “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”—Proverbs 17:22

Align Yourself with God’s Promises of Mental Health

Choose to cancel the negative thoughts and feed your faith. When you think of things above, God will supernaturally impart peace of mind. Renew your mind by declaring His promises.

  • “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”—Jeremiah 29:11
  • “…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 4:7
  • “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”—Philippians 4:9
  • “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”—Deuteronomy 31:6

It is all about making the decision to be self-disciplined. The Spirit provides His fruit for our good so that we may come into agreement with the Lord and His will.

What Does the Bible Say About Spiritual Health?

Spiritual health—what does that look like? If we ask 50 people, we might get 50 unique answers. Here are a few ways to assess our spiritual health.

Do we allow God’s Word to correct us?

  • “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”—2 Timothy 3:16-17

Do we have roots of bitterness and anger that fester up, creating a roadblock to blessings?

  • … looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled…”—Hebrews 12:15

Do we love God’s faithful instruction?

  • “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.”—Psalm 119:97

How we answer these could be an indication of the temperature of our spiritual health. Jesus spoke very strong words to those who were “lukewarm” in their faith.

“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”—Revelation 3:16

Lukewarm doesn’t mean you must be perfect. That would nullify the work of Christ on the cross. However, it does pose a question as to where your priorities lie. The Lord says to seek His Kingdom and all else will be given to you (see Matthew 6:33).

We must not forget our first love (see Revelation 2:4). We will have tests and trials. They build our character and faith. But consider where you go to sort out the chaos and confusion that surrounds you during those times. You can approach Him with confidence that He is on your side. Bible Verses about Health and Wellness

Health and wellness are not only about the physical but also includes the spiritual and mental. Here are some verses that will help us to look at health and wellness from many different points of view.

  1. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, ²⁰for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19,20 ESV

This verse serves as a constant reminder that we should be intentional in how we treat and care for our bodies. When we illtreat our bodies we not only dishonor the Holy Spirit but also set ourselves on a path that leads to poor health.

It is in our best interest to treat our bodies well. Resting, physical activities, and eating habits are a few things we have to take into consideration if we intend to be healthy while using our bodies as tools that glorify God.

  1. Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security. Jeremiah 33:6 ESV

The Lord promises health, healing, prosperity, and security in this text. God is able to bless us with good health. If we become sick, He has the power to heal us and restore our health.

The same God that healed Job, restored health to the woman with the issue of blood, and cleansed Naaman has the power to bless us with health if we put our trust in Him.

  1. You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you. Exodus 23:25 ESV

This passage is a helpful reminder that God is our source of health and wellness. It is He who blesses the food we eat and drink while also fortifying and sustaining our bodies.

Another lesson we may learn from this text is that we should not hesitate to seek God when we are ill. He has promised that He will remove sickness from us and we should claim this promise in faith.

  1. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22 ESV

Health and wellness are also about how we think and feel. Our emotions have the ability to cheer us up or to dampen our moods. A joyful heart speaks to emotions such as happiness and contentment.

When we are happy it is reflected in our mood, conversation, and how we relate to others. A joyful heart is great for our health and also those we come in contact with.

  1. Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. Proverbs 12:25. ESV

Anxiety can make us very unhappy and also affect our emotional and mental health. This verse points out the effects of anxiety while also providing a remedy.

‘A good word makes him glad’ points to two things. First, if we provide encouragement for an anxious person it will help to make him or her feel better. Secondly, a good word may point to the word of God.

There are many promises and encouraging verses in the Bible that talk about anxiety. One such verse is Psalm 55:22. It states, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved”. The 3 Most Powerful Reality Creation Techniques (No Meditation Required)

Bible Verses About Good Health

Good health is very important as it affects our physical and spiritual wellbeing. Let us see what these verses say about good health.

  1. Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. 3 John 1:2 ESV

Our health condition has certain effects on our wellbeing. In times of good health, we are happy while in times of bad health we become sad, depressed, and hopeless.

The apostle understood this and that is why he prayed that the members of the early church be in good health. As he greeted them, he expressed that he wanted good things, wellness, and good health for them.

  1. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. John 6:35 ESV

What we eat and drink affects our physical health. In the same way whatever we feed our minds and souls on affects us spiritually. This is why Jesus offers himself as the bread of life and the living water.

Let us continually feast on the word of God and believe in Him. Matthew 5:6 encourages us to yearn for the things that pertain to God. It states, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied”.

  1. But he answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”. Matthew 4:4 ESV

Good health has to do with finding the right balance between the physical, spiritual, and the mental. This verse reminds us to pay attention to both the physical and spiritual while also showing the importance of being mentally strong.

This text is a helpful reminder that we need to eat to sustain our bodies and we should not neglect the word of God because they guide our spiritual life. After forty days of not eating Jesus was in a perfect frame of mind. He was not depressed or easily convinced by the Devil’s tempting offers.

The Devil will use many tricks to appeal to our literal and spiritual appetites. He will wow and lure us with things that are bad for our health. This is why we have to be physically, mentally, and spiritually prepared to resist his temptations.

Find hope in 1 Corinthians 10:13 as you resist temptation. It states, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it”.

  1. Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14 ESV

This passage is a beautiful prayer that anyone can use to pray for healing and good health. The Lord promises in Jeremiah 33:6 that He will provide health and healing. He is our source of health and we are able to depend on His word for strength and restoration.

Proverbs 4:20-22 also encourages us to pay attention to the word of God. It states, “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. ²¹Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. ²²For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh“.

  1. Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Proverbs 16:24 ESV

The words we speak and listen to may affect us in one way or another. Positive words fortify us while negative words may destroy us. Pleasant words motivate and encourage us. They make us happy and joyful instead of resentful and bitter. The way we speak affects us and those who listen to us.

The power of life and death lies in the tongue. That’s why it’s important to be positive. Let us encourage and affirm as we speak hope, health, and life in our life and the lives of those around us.

Bible Verses about Healthy Eating

Eating healthy is about moderation not extravagance. Let’s take a look at some texts that deal with healthy eating practices.

  1. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

The first step to eating healthy is not about overindulgence but glorifying God. Eating healthy requires moderation, self control, and choosing to eat based on the requirements that God gave us.

The Lord doesn’t want us to destroy our bodies by consuming harmful substances such as alcohol and drugs. He doesn’t want us to eat too much of the foods that are healthy.

We shouldn’t eat something just because it’s expensive, in style, or make us fit in with a particular crowd. We should eat to fortify our bodies while bringing glory to God.

  1. It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory. Proverbs 25:27 ESV

This scripture speaks about modesty. As we aim to eat healthy, we should remember not to overindulge. Verse 16 of the same chapter states, ” If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it”.

Overeating may lead to illness therefore we should be careful of what we eat and how much we eat to ensure we remain in good health.

  1. And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. Genesis 1:29 ESV

The Lord made provision for us to eat healthy. He provided plants with fruits and seeds for us to nourish our bodies. God did not make Adam and Eve first then move on to create light, water, animals and food after.

He was very intentional in providing everything they would need for their health, sustenance, and wellbeing. Thanks to God’s creative power we have a wide variety of herbs, spices, fruits, and vegetables to enjoy.

  1. And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, ²“Speak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. ³Whatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. Leviticus 11:1-3 ESV

God is all knowing. He is aware of the impact eating certain things will have on the body. That is why He outlined in detail the things He expects us to eat and the things we should not eat.

God went on to categorize animals based on ‘clean’ and ‘unclean’ and also gave a description for birds and animals that live in water that shouldn’t be eaten.

  1. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. Daniel 1:8 ESV

Simplicity is better than extravagance and Daniel and his three friends proved this. Instead of eating lavishly they had a simple diet of vegetables and water.

Verse fifteen of the same chapter noted that, “At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food”.

Healthy eating habits are not dependent on extravagance. A lot of food doesn’t guarantee a balanced diet, happiness or contentment. Proverbs 17:1 noted that, “Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife”.

Bible Verses About a Healthy Body

A healthy body has to do with the mind, body and soul. Here are some verses that speak about healthy bodies.

  1. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. Luke 2:52 ESV

This passage is a reminder that a healthy body takes more than the physical into account. A sound frame of mind and a strong spiritual connection are needed for holistic wellness.

From this verse we realize that Jesus was physically well. Along with that He was confident and informed enough to reason with the teachers in the temple. His wisdom amazed those who heard Him.

Daniel 2:20 highlights the mental wellness of Daniel and his three friends. It states that, “And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom”.

The Hebrew boys were healthier physically, mentally, and spiritually thanks to their healthy diet and a strong spiritual connection with God.

  1. saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.” Exodus 15:26 ESV

Obedience to God will ensure that followers of Christ have a healthy body. This may seem far-fetched but it really is true. If we should adhere to the outlines provided in the scriptures, eat according to the guidelines that God stipulated, and practice moderation, having a healthy body would not be such a difficult task.

He promised the children of Israel that if they are obedient, He will not allow diseases that affect the Egyptians to affect them. The verse ended with a profound statement, “I am the Lord your healer”. The Lord is the best healer in the entire universe to give us a healthy body.

  1. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. ⁸It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. Proverbs 3:7,8 ESV

This passage also highlights the importance of obedience to God in order to have a healthy body. Turning away from evil means not participating in bad or unhealthy practices that will compromise our health.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle and reap the benefits. The NIV translation for verse eight states that, “This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”

  1. I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 ESV

This verse is a helpful reminder that we should be intentional and careful of how we treat our bodies. Our health and wellness should be treated with the greatest importance because our bodies ought to be ‘living sacrifices’ that are ‘holy and acceptable to God’.

  1. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. ³⁰Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; Isaiah 40:29,30 ESV

Sometimes through exhaustion our bodies become weak and we get faint. This text offers a solution for anyone who becomes weak by pointing to a never-ending source of strength.

The Lord is able to strengthen and empower us if we are patient enough to wait on Him. The verse that follows states, “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint”.

Bible Verses About Healthcare

In caring for our health, we take steps to address or prevent illness. Let’s see how these verses help to provide healing and restore health.

  1. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. James 5:14,15 ESV

This health care strategy as set out in James requires faith, prayer, and believers working together to restore health with the help of God.

This scripture has many important lessons. Firstly, the elders of the church are tasked with the role of physical and spiritual health care agents who perform their duties for the Lord. Secondly, as followers of Christ we should seek God first for healing and restoration.

  1. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. Malachi 4:2 ESV

The healing that God offers to those who fear His name brings joy and peace. When He restores us, we can’t help being thankful for His mercies, love, and goodness. It’s hard for us to keep still and like the woman of Samaria we proclaim the good news as we tell others ‘Come, see a man’.

  1. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 ESV

We should always be mindful that in spite of the advancements in science and medicine, only the Lord can offer holistic healing. Allow God to be the chief physician of your emotional, physical, and spiritual care because He is the restorer of body, mind, and soul.

  1. For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’ Jeremiah 30:17 ESV

This text is a reminder to Israel and followers of Christ today that God is the ultimate healer. There is no situation too dismal or illness too terminal for God.

He promises healing and restoration because He values our wellbeing and happiness. Claim His promises and receive the healing He has in store for you.

  1. But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Matthew 9:12 ESV

Jesus was referring to the spiritual wellbeing of others when He said these words. He came to call sinners to repentance and to save those who have lost their way in this sinful world.

He is the Great Physician and during His earthly ministry He performed miracles that brought physical and spiritual healing. Luke 4:40,41 shows how He cared for the health of others.

It states, “Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. ⁴¹And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak”.

This same Jesus is touched with the feelings of our infirmities. He wants nothing more than for us to be healthy and happy as we patiently await His second return.

Final thought on health

Being healthy is not only about the physical. Therefore, we have to pay the same amount of attention to the mental and spiritual if we want holistic wellness. 8 Hour Deep Sleep Blissbody Meditation For Instant Healing And Deep Rejuvenation

Deuteronomy 7:12-15

12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the LORD your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.

13 He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land—your grain, new wine and olive oil—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.

15 The LORD will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you.
